Subtropical Gyre Nutrient Cycling in the Upper Ocean: Insights From a Nutrient‐Ratio Budget Method

نویسندگان

چکیده

We use a nutrient-ratio budget method to investigate the relative importance of different nutrient source and sink terms at time-series Station ALOHA Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS) in North Pacific subtropical gyres, respectively. At mean state conditions over annual multi-year time scales, vertical phosphate () supply from subsurface accounts for ∼60% total phosphorus both sites. Dissolved organic matter transport zooplankton excretion are more important phosphorous export pathways than sinking particles BATS. The approach provides quantitative, observation-based constraints on sources sinks surface ocean, which helps improve our understanding biological carbon pump oligotrophic oceans.

Alkaline phosphatase activity in the subtropical ocean: insights from nutrient, dust and trace metal addition experiments

*Correspondence: Claire Mahaffey, Department of Earth, Ocean and Ecological Sciences, University of Liverpool, Nicholson Building, 4 Brownlow Street, Liverpool, Merseyside L69 3GP, UK e-mail: [email protected] Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for all life on earth. In the ocean, the most bioavailable form of phosphorus is inorganic phosphate, but in the extensive subtropical gyres, phosphat...

Subtropical gyre variability as seen from satellites

Subtropical gyre variability as seen from satellites" (2012). NASA Publications. Paper 193. A satellite multi-sensor approach is used to analyse the biological response of open ocean regions of the subtropical gyres to changes in physical forcing. Thirteen years (1998–2010) of Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) chlorophyll-a (chl-a) data, combined with concurrent satellite records ...

Metagenomic Insights Into the Microbial Community and Nutrient Cycling in the Western Subarctic Pacific Ocean

The composition and metabolic functions of prokaryotic communities in the western subarctic Pacific (WSP), where strong mixing of waters from the Sea of Okhotsk and the East Kamchatka Current result in transfer to the Oyashio Current, were investigated using a shotgun metagenome sequencing approach. Functional metabolic genes related to nutrient cycling of nitrogen, sulfur, carbohydrates, iron ...

Toxin production by Crocosphaera watsonii: structure and influence on nutrient cycling in the upper ocean

Cyanobacteria are abundant components of the biosphere and play a crucial role in carbon sequestration and oxygen supply to the atmosphere. In addition to their photosynthetic capabilities, some cyanobacteria contribute to global ocean productivity by fixing inert atmospheric nitrogen gas (N2) into a bioavailable form. Many of these nitrogen-fixing bacteria (diazotrophs) also produce toxic meta...

Phosphorus cycling in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre using cosmogenic 32P and 33P

The North Pacific Subtropical Gyre (NPSG) has been hypothesized to be in transition from a nitrogen (N)-limited system to one predominantly limited by phosphorus (P) as a result of a two-decade-long selection for N2-fixing organisms. In this study, the naturally occurring cosmogenic radioisotopes, 32P (half-life 5 14.3 d) and 33P (halflife 5 25.3 d), were measured and 33P/32P activity ratios we...
